Welcome to Burton Nursery
A very warm welcome to The Co-operative Childcare.

Here you will find lots of general information that should be useful in getting a feel for the setting, however every child is individual and you will undoubtedly have lots of questions that relate specifically to your child’s needs, interests and their development. A tour of our quality facilities would be highly recommended in order to fully appreciate how the nursery operates and to see first hand the care and attention that each child receives. To arrange a tour, simply use the contact details on this page or pop in to the nursery itself.

At The Co-operative Childcare we never underestimate how difficult a decision it is to leave your child in the care of others and our aim is to ensure that you have all the information you need to make this very important decision.

Our people

Our dedicated nursery team of 30 colleagues are passionate about their work and have been carefully selected for their experience and qualifications. The majority of the team hold a level 3 qualification, the few who do not, currently hold a level 2 qualification and are striving to achieve their level 3 within the year. Our Nursery Manager Sally has over 15 years experience in childcare and has recently completed her Foundation Degree in Early Years. All of our team have positive attitudes to diversity and treating each child as an individual, and they support our children to learn from the earliest age about the value of diversity themselves and how they can make a positive contribution to society.

Indoor facilities

The environment plays a key role in supporting and extending children’s learning and development. Children at The Co-operative Childcare Burton nursery may choose to play indoors or outdoors as we operate a ‘free flow’ system, giving the children space and resources for physical development, indoors and outdoors. Our indoor learning environment consists of 4 rooms split into the following age groups: 3 months to 1 year olds, 1 to 2 year olds, 2 to 3 year olds and 3 to 5 year olds. The indoor environments are attractive and welcoming, and are regularly updated to maintain our children’s interests.

Outdoor facilities

There are a good range of adult-led and child initiated activities available indoors and outdoors. They have opportunities to explore and set themselves challenges with close supervision. Our excellent outdoor area is imaginatively resourced for activities such as role play, gardening and creativity. The children are able to access the outdoor area in all weathers as our newly built canopy provides shelter and shade at all times.

Activities

We are guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage and the nursery team aim to deliver individualised learning, development and care that give children the best possible start in life via our stringent Key person approach. Activities are selected to offer first hand experiences that allow children to build on their natural curiosity, develop language, use their imagination and develop positive relationships.

Food

At The Co-operative Childcare we offer a comprehensive package and provide all nappies and food (breakfast, mid morning snack, lunch, mid afternoon snack, tea). Our experienced chef prepares a home cooked lunch every day using fresh produce sourced from local suppliers where possible including our local butcher a few minutes away from our nursery. This supports our ethics and values of being a co-operative and gives the children the nutrition they need to ensure they grow healthily whilst in our care. We also cater for all dietary requirements, allergies and cultural foods and our food is freshly made on a daily basis. Children are encouraged to self serve during snack and mealtimes with the nursery team encouraging a social nature to meal times by role modelling good behaviours. Children are offered fresh drinking water throughout the day and an option of milk or water during snack times. Our chef brings in food in its original state during some mealtimes in order for our children to see its transformation from a raw to cooked state and to ensure we are always educating our children in making the right food choices for their future well being.

Parent involvement

Excellent liaison with parents and carers is crucial to having an understanding of their children’s needs and interests in the context of their family background. We strive to make parents feel welcome and involve them as partners in their child’s learning and development. During induction to our nursery we celebrate their child’s journey so far by asking them to share as much information with us as possible to establish a starting point for the nursery team to begin making a contribution to their child’s learning. We have many ways to keep our parents informed of their children’s progress and nursery developments, our dedicated parent notice boards, newsletters, questionnaires, parent representative board, verbal communication, informative displays, daily summary sheets, link books, open evenings and social events are just a few examples. We operate an open door policy, and our approachable management team are always open and receptive to parents and carers suggestions for improvement.

A word from the nursery manager

“Our shared vision is to provide an excellent service for all of our children and their families and to make a positive difference to their lives. We are always striving for improvement by aspiring to always do better and recognising that reflective practice is crucial to our success. Although we have achieved an overall ‘Outstanding’ in an Ofsted inspection that took place in May 2011, we are still highly motivated to move forward, thinking creatively to find new ways to keep making a positive difference and maintaining the very high standards achieved in our nursery”
