Welcome to Newcastle Nursery.
A very warm welcome to The Co-operative Childcare.

Here you will find lots of general information that should be useful in getting a feel for the setting, however every child is individual and you will undoubtedly have lots of questions that relate specifically to your child’s needs, interests and their development. A tour of our quality facilities would be highly recommended in order to fully appreciate how the nursery operates and to see first hand the care and attention that each child receives. To arrange a tour, simply use the contact details on this page or pop in to the nursery itself.

At The Co-operative Childcare we never underestimate how difficult a decision it is to leave your child in the care of others and our aim is to ensure that you have all the information you need to make this very important decision.

Latest Ofsted report

“Much value is placed on the views and opinions of parents. They receive questionnaires inviting them to make suggestions for improvement. In turn, parents receive feedback from the nursery in the form of 'You Said, We Did' leaflets. Parents have very positive views of the nursery and the staff. They say that the service they receive 'goes way beyond their expectations' and describe staff as 'fabulous' and 'really caring'.”

Our people

Our nursery team are friendly, approachable and have attended numerous training courses to enhance their knowledge, enabling them to provide the best care and enjoyable learning experiences for our children. All colleagues are qualified or working towards their qualifications and together they have over 225 years of experience in childcare. Our Nursery Manager Denise has over 33 years of experience in childcare and there is a dedicated, loyal team of 28 colleagues who help our children to have the best start in life in a brightly refurbished modern nursery setting.

Indoor facilities

The Co-operative Childcare Newcastle nursery is a stimulating, safe and secure environment for your child and we pride ourselves on our warm and welcoming atmosphere. There are 4 home rooms within our nursery split into the following age groups: one room for 3 months – 1 year, one room for 1-2 year olds, one room for the 2-3 year olds and one room for the 3-5 year olds.

We also have a small cosy sensory room which has been developed for the children complete with soft furnishings and special lighting to stimulate the children’s senses. Small groups of children of all ages access the room along with their key person to use their senses to explore and discover new experiences. This special room is particularly useful when new children are going through the settling process as it offers an area that aids the sense of security compared with the spacious play rooms.

Outdoor facilities

The Newcastle Nursery is a grade 2 listed building in the city centre of Newcastle. There are four large children’s playrooms and a spacious atrium which is used for physical play.

An outdoor play area is available a short walk away from the nursery. The space can comfortably accommodate up to 20 children at any one time and our children delight in growing plants and watching trains arrive and depart from the central train station.

Parking for parents is available with a drop off and pick up point at the side of the nursery building.

Activities

There are many activities in addition to the core learning and play that takes place at the nursery and supports the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework. These activities are planned in advance and very often with parent participation.

The nursery team also take full advantage of our City Centre location and regularly take the children on walking trips to local places of interest. These include the central library, local market, cathedral and Blackfriars grassed area. The Co-operative Childcare has a good relationship with the Discovery Museum. For example, the team assisted the museum when they were in the planning and developing stages for their "Play Tyne" water area and our children were invited to pilot the area before it opened to the public.

Food

At The Co-operative Childcare we offer a comprehensive package and provide all nappies and food (breakfast, mid morning snack, lunch, mid afternoon snack, tea). Our chef prepares a home cooked lunch every day using fresh produce sourced from local suppliers where possible. This supports our ethics and values of being a co-operative and gives the children the nutrition they need to ensure they grow healthily whilst in our care. We also cater for all dietary requirements, allergies and cultural foods and our food is freshly made on a daily basis. Children always have access to fresh drinking water.

By following stringent food safety procedures our Newcastle Nursery has been awarded the highest rating 'Five Stars - Scores on the Doors' from Newcastle Environmental Health Department for the last three years consecutively.

Parent involvement

The parents have an information board located in the reception area which has a variety of useful information. In the various 0-3 year olds home rooms they have a feedback sheet which includes the children’s daily information of how they have been, including sleep, food, nappies and anything that they have enjoyed during the day. The 3-5 year olds carers give verbal feedback to the parent on a daily basis. Regular newsletters are sent to parents to keep them updated on up and coming events and we encourage parent participation in many of them. When parents join the nursery they are asked to complete an information from home sheet which will help the key person to settle the child into the nursery environment. Parents evening are offered at regular intervals throughout the year where the child’s key person discusses the child’s development with their parents and there is also an annual survey for parents to give structured feedback on all areas of the nursery. Parent forum meetings are also held every month in the nursery. A summer picnic is held each year on a Sunday to allow working parents to participate and have the opportunity to meet with other parents in an informal setting. The children’s Christmas party is also usually held on a Sunday and we encourage all parents to attend and join in the festivities.

A word from the nursery manager

“Newcastle nursery is ideally situated next to the train station and the location is perfect for parents working in the city centre or having to use public transport to travel to work. Entrance to the nursery is gained via a grand foyer of the Grade 2 listed building and the setting has some unique features such as a large atrium with skylights which is available for children of all age ranges to use. This large area is ideal for walk in sand play, soft play, large climbing frame equipment, movement to music and large creative activities. We also have a small cosy sensory room complete with soft furnishings and special lighting to stimulate the children’s senses.

We have a stable and highly experienced team who are dedicated to their work in caring for young children and who pride themselves in providing a variety of activities to support individuality and development at all times.

The majority of parents choose our nursery through recommendation and we currently have some very happy parents with their second and third children attending the nursery”
